Extra Credit and Bonus Grades

There are a few ways you can add extra credit and bonus points to grades in BOLT. You can set an item or category to be able to “exceed” its maximum value, or you can create bonus items.

Allow for Extra Credit Points in a Grade Item

  1. Create or edit a Numeric, Selectbox, or Pass/Fail grade item.
  2. On the Properties tab, select the checkbox under Can Exceed.
    Grading can exceed checkbox
NOTEFor extra credit, do not modify the Maximum Points. Selecting Can Exceed allows you to add additional points on a student’s grade if they earn the extra credit. For example, if you are giving students a chance to get 5 extra credit points on a 50 point assignment, the Maximum Points will be 50 points. When you are grading, you can grade a student 55/50

  3. Click Save and Close.

Create a Bonus Item

  1. Create or edit a Numeric, Selectbox, or Pass/Fail grade item.
  2. On the Properties tab, select the checkbox under Bonus.

  3. Click Save and Close.

BOLTTIP: If your extra credit or bonus item is in a category, and you want the points to be applied to the final grade, you MUST edit the category and select the Can Exceed option in the category!
