Not Seeing the Grades

There are a number of reasons why you or your students may not be seeing grades.

You Can’t See Grades in Enter Grades

If you can’t see grades or your grade scheme in the Grades tool, you may need to check your Personal Display Options in the Grades Settings. These options let you set what information you want to see in Grades. These affect what you see.

  1. In Grades, click Settings.
    Manage Grades, Settings
  2. Click the Personal Display Options tab.
  3. Under Grade Details, make sure you have the options you want to see selected.
Personal Display options can be selected or unselected.

If you have these selected but still aren’t seeing grades for a particular item,

  • Did you override display options in the grade item? Check this by editing the item and looking at the Managing View Display Options on the Properties tab. If you selected to override and then de-selected any of the items, this could be why you can’t see the grades. To resolve, make sure Points grade and/or Grade scheme symbol are selected.

  • Is the item a quiz grade? If you did not have a grade item associated with the quiz, or if you did not select both automatic grade options on the Assessment tab of the quiz, you will need to associate a grade item, select those options, and publish the grades.
  • Is the item a bonus item for a quiz with all questions set as bonus questions? If so, the grade won’t display. Resolve this by removing the bonus option from at least one question so the quiz is worth more than 0 points.
  • Is the item an assignment grade? If you did not publish grades, you will not see them. To resolve this, go to assignment submissions, finish grading if necessary, and publish grades.

Students Can’t See Grades

If students can’t see grades or your grade scheme in the Grades tool, you may need to check your Org Unit Display Options in Settings. These affect what students see in Grades.

  1. In Grades, click Settings.
    Manage Grades, Settings
  2. Click the Org Unit Display Options tab.
  3. Under Grade Details, make sure you have the options you want to see selected.
  4. Org Unit Display Options, Select options

If you have these selected but students still aren’t seeing grades for a particular item,

  • Is the item hidden? If you hid a grade item, and you want students to see it, you will need to make the item visible. To resolve this, edit the grade item, click the Restrictions tab, and select “Grade item is always visible” in Visibility options.
    Restrictions Tab, Visibility Section
  • Did you override display options in the grade item? Check this by editing the item and looking at the Student View Display Options on the Properties tab. If you selected to override and then de-selected any of the items, this could be why students can’t see the grades. To resolve, make sure Points grade and/or Grade scheme symbol are selected.

  • Is it the final grade? If students are not seeing final grades, you may need to release them.
  • Is the item a quiz grade? If you did not have a grade item associated with the quiz, or if you did not select both automatic grade options on the Assessment tab of the quiz, you will need to associate a grade item, select those options, and publish the grades. Students won’t see grades until they are published to grades.
  • Is the item a bonus item for a quiz with all questions set as bonus questions? If so, the grade won’t display. Resolve this by removing the bonus option from at least one question so the quiz is worth more than 0 points.
  • Is the item an assignment grade? If you did not publish grades, students will not see them. To resolve this, go to assignment submissions, finish grading if necessary, and publish grades. This can be done on the submissions page, on each evaluate page, or via a rubric.
