Many publishers offer test bank files that instructors can use to import directly into BOLT to quickly add questions in bulk instead of manually creating them. We recommend you contact your textbook publisher rep to see what options may be available to you as this can save valuable time when creating your assessments.
Options for Inputting Test Banks/Questions into BOLT
NOTE: Options are listed in order of speed and efficiency for inputting data.
Option 1 – Upload .csv or ZIP file from Assessments, Quizzes interface
Option 2 – Upload .ZIP file from Course Admin, Import/Export/Copy interface
Option 3 – Upload questions from an existing Word document or a use a
Quiz generator
Option 4 – Create questions manually from Assessments, Quizzes interface
Option 1
Using the textbook publishers .csv or ZIP file to import test banks and/or questions.
- In your BOLT course, navigate to Assessments and then to Quizzes:
- Click on Question Library:
- Click on Import, then Upload a File:
- Click on Browse Files and navigate to the location of the files on your computer.
Select the file and click Open:
- You will receive confirmation with another window after the successful upload of your file:
- The uploaded questions will now appear in the Question Library:
NOTE: Some publishers provide questions or course components in a ZIP file that must be imported to the Question Library from the Import/Export/Copy Components feature in BOLT. Continue to Option 2 for details.
Option 2
Importing publisher questions or course components using the Import/Export/Copy Components feature in BOLT.
- Click on Course Admin on the home page of your BOLT course:
- Click on Import/Export/Copy Components:
- Select Import Components and then click the Start button:
- Click on the Upload button, select your file, and click Open:
- Click on the Import All Components button:
- A notification window will inform you as the upload progresses.
- You will receive confirmation that your package was successfully imported. To view the content,click on the View Content button:
- Your quiz questions are now successfully loaded into BOLT!
Option 3
NOTE: You may already have questions in a word processor file created for your course. The questions can be uploaded to BOLT using the Respondus software.

Create Questions on BOLT Manually
NOTE: We recommend that you create your questions in the Question Library first. This will provide you with a bank of questions that will be available for any type of assessment:
- In your BOLT course, navigate to Assessments and then to Quizzes:
- Click on Question Library:
- Click New and then choose the type of question you intend to create:
- Fill in the Question Text
- Type in the possible answers and click the circle next to the correct answer ( appears).
- If you want the answers to be randomized for each quiz, select Randomize answer order.
- Input the desired points for the question
- Click Save
- Your new question will now appear in the Question Library:
